About the GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar®

The GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar® identifies emerging research trajectories and maps anticipated science and technology advances over the next 5, 10 and 25 years that will potentially have a significant impact on who we are as humans, how we live together in societies, and on our relationship with the planet.

As such, it serves as:

  • A single point of entry to keep pace with the anticipated advances in science and technology based on expert knowledge and data generated by leading researchers around the world
  • An interactive intelligence tool for informed discussion, concerted decision and consequential action on the implications of future scientific and technological advances for people, societies and the planet

The GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar ® is structured around five broad scientific themes:

Framed by these themes, the GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar® features Breakthrough Briefs – including one for each dot on the Radar’s graphic – alongside Sense-Maker Briefs, Landmark Reports and Invited Contributions.

Theme Introductions The Theme Introductions are high-level editorial pieces authored by GESDA. Drawing on its standing engagement with the philosophy community, each brings GESDA’s three fundamental questions to bear on its theme: who are we, as humans? How can we live together, as societies? What is our relationship with the planet?

Breakthrough Briefs Breakthrough Briefs provide an overview of a topic and its anticipated developments over the next 5, 10 and 25 years. Each is the output of a GESDA Science Anticipation Workshop, which gathers leading researchers from the relevant field.

Sense-Making Briefs Where the Breakthrough Briefs detail what may be coming, the Sense-Making Briefs provide an interpretation of its potential implications for people, societies and the planet. Each is the output of a GESDA Sense-Making Lab, which gathers domain experts from the social sciences and humanities disciplines most relevant to the corresponding Radar topic.

Landmark Reports Landmark Reports cover transversal themes emerging from Breakthrough Briefs and Sense-Making Briefs. Each is the output of a GESDA High Level Anticipation Meeting, which bring together researchers from across sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Landmark Reports also include GESDA’s Science Anticipation Lenses, which are substantial pieces of novel academic research that examine fundamental questions raised by anticipated breakthroughs from broader scientific, philosophical or geopolitical perspectives.

Invited Contributions Invited Contributions capture the perspectives of domain-expert researchers on novel emerging trends not otherwise covered in the Radar, or on complementary areas closely related to existing topics.
